‘The Finest Quality is the Best Service.’

Niroku Masaki, succeeded to make the first industrial production of pencils in Japan and established Mitsubishi Pencil Co., Ltd. in 1887.

Masaki saw pencils for the first time when he attended the Paris Universal Exposition in 1901. Although writing brushes were widely used by Japanese people, Masaki was impressed with the pencils and that prompted him to develop the technique in Japan.

Until the development was successful it was one trial and error after another and took about twenty years to perfect. However, his business was destroyed during the Second World War. His determination and tenacity helped him develop Uni and Hi-uni pencils and eventually overtaken foreign competitors.

Based on his slogan ‘new technique, new field and new world’ and the company’s motto ‘The Finest Quality is the Best Service’, the Mitsubishi pencil has been developing their technique and technology such as designing new ink and developing a coating technique and carbonic material.

Some people think that Mitsubishi pencil is the same Mitsubishi group, which is running multiple businesses such as heavy industry, commercial business and banks, but
Mitsubishi pencil is a completely different company.

The company’s name itself would be famous enough, but ‘Uni’ – an abbreviation for ‘unique’ - are also widely known in the world.

Uni pencil was sold in 1958. Due to its high popularity, Uni transformed a simple product name to a coporate brand.
